Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) to Host CUSP/CAUTI Conference

The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) will be hosting an event about the Comprehensive Unit-Based Safety Project for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections on June 15, ed 2011.

The Comprehensive Unit-Based Safety Project for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections

“With a staggering price tag and high mortality rate, mind catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are the most common type of hospital-acquired infection in U.S. hospitals with the vast majority of these infections being preventable. The Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET), seek through a contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Quality and Safety Research Group (JHU QSRG), the Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA Keystone), and investigators from the University of Michigan, implemented a patient safety program to dramatically reduce CAUTI nationwide.”

Pennsylvania Chosen for the CUSP/CAUTI Project

Pennsylvania is among the ten original states chosen for CUSP initiative participation.  By using the CUSP developed modules, the state goal is to reduce the mean CAUTI rates by 25 percent within a two-year period.

Faculty

Faculty for the event include:

Sanjay Saint, M.D., a professor of internal medicine at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and the University of Michigan.  Dr. Saint is also the director of the VA/University of Michigan Patient Safety Enhancement Program.

Sam Watson, M.S.A., the senior vice president for patient safety and quality of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA).  Mr. Watson is also the executive director of the MHA Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality.

Sharon L. Muscatell, R.N., the director of quality and performance improvement for The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

Participants of the CUSP/CAUTI Project

The state of Pennsylvania has identified ten hospital organizations willing to participate in the national CAUTI project.  These organizations are:

  • Aria Health System
  • Clearfield Hospital
  • Geisinger Medical Center
  • Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center
  • HealthSouth Hospital of Pittsburgh
  • Jeanes Hospital
  • LifeCare Hospitals of Chester County
  • Nazareth Hospital
  • The Good Samaritan Hospital
  • Wayne Memorial Hospital

The event costs $40 per person.

Attendance is limited to HAP hospitals participating in the CUSP/CAUTI project.  Team involvement is encouraged including the following members: physician, staff nurse, infection control preventionist, and senior management champion.
