Hawaii Passes HAI Legislation; Governor Signs July 1, 2011

Hawaii’s Governor, Neil Abercrombie, has signed new state legislation establishing healthcare associated infection reporting in Hawaii.

House Bill 889 was signed by the Governor on July 1, 2011.  The law requires each healthcare facility certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to report information about healthcare-associated infections to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) as specified by CMS rules.

The law also requires the Hawaii Department of Health to prepare a public report containing information about healthcare-associated infections occurring in the state for the previous calendar year.
