Healthy People 2020 Adds LinkedIn as Social Network Platform

May 16, 2011

As part of their strategic planning efforts, order the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) has recently decided to use LinkedIn as the social media platform for their Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) campaign.

“HP2020 provides science-based, 10-year national objectives to help Americans attain high-quality, longer lives, free of preventable diseases, disability, injury, and premature death.”  One of the goals of HP2020 is to “prevent, reduce, and ultimate eliminate healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).”  “The establishment of the Healthcare-Associated Infections objectives for Healthy People 2020 reflects the commitment of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to preventing and reducing HAIs.”

The two high priority HAI objectives of Healthy People 2020 are to address central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections by reducing the incidence of both infections by 75%.  Progress in reducing other major types of infections will also be addressed: catheter-assocuated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), surgical site infections (SSI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and Clostridium difficile infections (C. diff).
