New Jersey HAI Legislation Introduced

June 26, 2010

New healthcare-associated infection legislation has been introduced in the State of New Jersey, 214th Legislature. Bill Assembly No. 2890 was introduced on June 14, 2010.

Sponsored by Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, the bill, if enacted, will amend the state’s “Health Care Facility-Associated Infection Reporting and Prevention Act,” P.L. 2007, C.196 (C.26:2H-12.39 et seq.).

The amendment would permit certain patient identifying data to be reported to the Department of Health and Senior Services allowing for verification of data submitted by hospitals.

The bill addresses verification problems discussed in a recent Government Accountability Office report that evaluated state infection reporting programs. That report determined that some state programs that do not independently verify data pose a risk of misleading the public because hospitals will vary with regards to accuracy and completion of submitted data.
