Next Week is International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW)

October 13, 2011

Next week marks the 25th anniversary of the International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW).

IIPW was established in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the third week of October as National Infection Control Week.  The proclamation states:

Now, sick Therefore, story I, view Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the weeks beginning October 19, 1986, and October 18, 1987, as National Infection Control Week. I call upon all Federal, State, and local government agencies, health organizations, communications media, and the people of the United States to observe these weeks with appropriate programs and activities.

To commemorate IIPW the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), in collaboration with global partners, will be hosting numerous activities.

“As we mark the 25th anniversary of IIPW, we celebrate the substantial progress that has been made in preventing certain healthcare-associated infections, which have been identified as a Winnable Battle by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” said APIC 2011 President Russell Olmsted, MPH, CIC. “But we have a long way to go to attain our ultimate objective of eliminating preventable infections. We believe that the added focus on these issues during IIPW will help us to sustain and accelerate progress toward this objective.”

The following activities and programs will occur throughout the week:

  • APIC and the National Journal will be hosting a policy summit on October 19 in Washington, DC.  The summit will be webcast live and archived.  It will feature discussions by policy experts about the elimination of preventable infections, improving patient outcomes, and the role of infection preventionists.
  • APIC will be providing a series of infection prevention webinars for health professsionals.
  • A keynote webinar provided by APIC on October 17 will feature the presidents of APIC and SHEA discussing a partnership paradigm of the future of infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology.
