Washington State Hospital Association’s Workforce Flu Immunizations Pays Off

June 22, 2011

The Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) notes in its June 16, 2011 Newsletter that its collective work in increasing workforce flu immunizations is paying off with major increases in workforce immunization rates.

Identifying strategies used by high performers, the WSHA has made recommendations for hospitals to consider for next year’s flu campaign:

  1. Hospitals with a policy of masking and education typically had higher results compared with those hospitals using education alone.
  2. Employee convenience was critical for achieving high results.
  3. Champions, including physicians, nurses, and others, were very helpful in communicating the importance of flu immunizations.

WSHA plans on releasing immunization rate information for each hospital in late July 2011. Hospitals will be allowed to review the data on the WSHA’s quality transparency preview website before it is released.
